Apple May Bring Back Plans to Manufacture iPads in India, Eyes Pune for AirPod Cases

Apple may bring back plans to manufacture iPads in India, with Pune being considered for AirPod case production, reflecting the tech giant’s strategic shift towards diversifying its supply chain. Encouraged by the Indian government’s push to localize production, Apple is reportedly seeking a new manufacturing partner after previous efforts were hindered by regulatory issues.

 Previous Setbacks and New Opportunities

Last year, Apple shifted its iPad production focus to Vietnam with BYD due to challenges in securing approvals for setting up operations in India. However, the situation has evolved, and Apple is now looking to reinitiate its plans for iPad manufacturing in India. A senior government official mentioned, “We are now trying to help Apple expand further for the next two to three years. There will be substantial growth.”

Expanding Production Capabilities

In addition to iPads, Apple is also planning to enhance its production of AirPod components. The company has already started trial production of wireless charging case parts in Pune with Jabil Inc. Once quality testing is complete, Jabil is expected to ramp up commercial production, serving both export and domestic markets. Foxconn might also participate in this production initiative.

Apple’s Broader Strategy in India

Apple’s ambitions extend beyond iPads and AirPods. The company has shared extensive plans with the Indian government to establish a robust alternative supply chain in the country. This includes increasing local production of laptops, desktops, and iPhones. Currently, Apple manufactures a significant portion of its iPhones in India through Foxconn and Tata Electronics. The latter is in the process of acquiring Pegatron’s India operations to further bolster iPhone production.

 Market Impact and Future Prospects

The shift to India is part of Apple’s broader strategy to reduce dependency on Chinese suppliers. Analysts from JP Morgan have predicted that by 2025, a quarter of all Apple products will be manufactured outside China. In line with this, Apple aims to produce a quarter of its iPhones in India over the next few years, up from the current 14%.

 Financial Performance and Market Share

In the first two months of FY25, Apple exported over $2 billion worth of iPhones from India, accounting for 81% of the country’s total iPhone production. This significant export volume underscores Apple’s growing manufacturing capabilities in India. In 2023, Apple shipped over 10 million iPhones in India, surpassing Samsung to become the top revenue generator in the Indian smartphone market.

 Challenges and the Road Ahead

Despite these positive developments, Apple faces challenges in fully realizing its manufacturing potential in India. Regulatory hurdles, geopolitical tensions, and the need for a reliable local vendor network are some of the obstacles that need to be addressed. However, with the Indian government’s support and Apple’s strategic initiatives, the future looks promising.

 Conclusion

Apple’s renewed focus on India for iPad and AirPod production highlights the country’s growing importance in the global supply chain. By leveraging local manufacturing capabilities, Apple aims to not only meet its global demand but also cater to the rising domestic market. This strategic shift is poised to significantly impact both Apple’s growth trajectory and India’s position in the global tech manufacturing landscape.
