Chinese Defense Minister Warns Against External Meddling as Military Communications Renewed with US

During a recent defense forum in Singapore, China’s Defense Minister underscored the importance of reestablished military dialogue with the United States. However, amidst heightened tensions in the Asia-Pacific, the minister accused Washington of exacerbating friction by supporting Taiwan and the Philippines.

In his address at the Shangri-La defense forum, Chinese Defense Minister Dong Jun reiterated China’s stance against allowing geopolitical conflicts or warfare to infiltrate the region. He emphasized China’s commitment to maintaining stability and preventing chaos.

The South China Sea disputes have been a focal point, with China vehemently asserting its claims. Dong emphasized China’s strategic culture of universal love and non-aggression while issuing a warning to the Philippines, which has grown closer to the US since the election of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in 2022.

Amidst escalating tensions, Marcos Jr.’s administration has bolstered security alliances with various countries and expanded US military presence in Philippine bases. Dong accused the Philippines of intentionally provoking China, allegedly emboldened by external powers.

Dong, a former naval commander appointed in late December, recently held talks with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, marking the first in-person dialogue between top Chinese and American defense officials since 2022. Tensions escalated following a contentious visit to Taiwan by then-US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, which drew Beijing’s ire.

China considers Taiwan a renegade province and opposes any moves toward independence. Dong criticized US support for Taiwan’s government, cautioning against attempts at separation from China. He vowed resolute actions to prevent Taiwan independence, warning of the consequences of such endeavors.
